Get your yard back

Stumps gone, ready for grass

A stump is the last thing left after a tree comes down, and it can hang around for decades. We grind it out below the surface with a stump grinder, chip up the root flare and leave the spot level, so you can mow over it, seed it or plant something new.

One stump or a whole yard full, fresh stumps or ones that have been there for years. We protect your lawn, clean up the chips and leave the hole filled and ready for topsoil and seed.

Why grind it

Why stumps are worth removing

Leaving a stump to rot can take 10 years or more, and it causes problems the whole time.

Safer to mow and walk

Stumps break mower blades and trip kids and guests, especially once grass grows up around them.

No more suckers

Many stumps, like maple, poplar and sweetgum, keep sending up sprouts for years until the stump is ground out.

Fewer pests

Rotting stumps draw termites, carpenter ants and fungus, and they can spread to healthy trees and wood structures nearby.

Room to use the space

Grind it out and you can reseed, plant a new tree, lay a patio or build where the stump used to be.

Grinding vs. removal

Stump grinding or full stump removal?

For almost every yard, grinding is faster, cheaper and less destructive. Full removal is only needed in a few cases.

How it works

Four steps to a level yard

Most stumps take less than an hour.

  1. Send a photo

Tell us how many stumps, roughly how wide and how we can reach them. Photos help a lot.

  2. Mark utilities

We check for irrigation, buried cables and lines near the stump before we grind.

  3. Grind below grade

The stump and root flare are ground into chips below the surface.

  4. Clean up

Chips raked into the hole or hauled away, and the area left ready for topsoil and seed.

What clients are saying

"After a big storm took down a 60-foot oak right next to our house, I was panicking. These guys were out the same evening, had it safely removed by the next morning, and left the yard spotless."
Margaret R.Asheville, NC
"We had three huge trees removed from our backyard, one right over the deck. I was nervous about damage, but the crew was meticulous. They used ropes and rigging and not a single branch touched anything."
David K.Asheville, NC
"They trimmed all eight of our mature maples and did an outstanding job shaping them. The arborist explained everything beforehand and clearly cared about the health of the trees, not just getting done fast."

FAQ

Stump grinding questions

Anything else? Call us at 828-367-9685.

How deep do you grind stumps?

We grind below grade, typically 6 to 12 inches below the surface, which is deep enough to seed grass or plant flowers. If you plan to build or plant a new tree in the same spot, tell us and we will go deeper.

What happens to the roots?

Grinding removes the stump and the root flare. The remaining roots under the lawn are left to break down naturally over the next few years, and they will not regrow on most species once the stump is gone.

What do you do with the wood chips?

We can rake the chips back into the hole, haul them away or leave them for mulch. Most customers have us fill the hole with chips and topsoil so it is ready to seed.

Can you grind a stump in a fenced backyard?

Usually, yes. Tell us how wide your gate is when you request an estimate so we bring the right machine.

Do you grind stumps from trees someone else cut?

Yes. We grind old stumps, stumps left by other crews and stumps from trees that came down in storms.

Is grinding cheaper with tree removal?

Usually. When we grind the stump the same day we remove the tree, there is no extra trip, so it costs less than scheduling it separately.
